- The Tampa Bay Lightning (NHL) (http://lightning.nhl.com/)

The Tampa Bay Lightning are an ice hockey team that have been active in the National Hockey League since their foundation in 1992. Across the years they have established themselves as a team that is able to compete with some of the giants of the league, winning their first and only Stanley Cup to date in 2004.

A rough run of form over the past few years since the NHL "Lock-Out" in 2004-05, which destroyed any momentum from their league winning season, has left them struggling at the foot of the table. However through acquiring the likes of Steven Stamkos (1st Round, 1st Overall) in 2008 and Victor Hedman (1st Round, 2nd Overall) in 2009, the Bolts have provided themselves with the foundation to re-emerge as a Stanley Cup contender.

Captained by Vincent Lecavalier (C), Martin St. Louis (A) and Matthius Ohlund (A), The Tampa Bay Lightning have the experience to assist the young players into becoming some of the brightest and best talents in the NHL. Stamkos coming off of a 51 goal 2009-10 season in his sophomore year, landing him joint Maurice "Rocket" Richard Trophy winner with Sidney Crosby of the Pittsburgh Penguins.

In the post season, the Tampa Bay Lightning have announced several big additions to their franchise in an attempt to recreate the winning form of the 2003-04 team. Steve Yzerman was presented as the new GM on the 25th May 2010, whilst Guy Boucher of the Hamilton Bulldogs was appointed 10th June 2010 as the new head coach. Roster additions include the likes of defenseman Pavel Kubina, who was part of the Stanley Cup winning team, goaltender Dan Ellis, and left winger Simon Gagne from the Philadelphia Flyers who should help bolster the offense. St. Louis also signed a contract extension that should keep him with the Lightning until 2014-15.

Charli I watched an ice hockey match in Toronto, the players spent the majority of the time fighting and throwing helmets at each other!! Are games usually this violent?!

Matty

Matty Ha. In Toronto i'm sure you know they are hockey nuts. Some games are fairly quite and some are manic. There is normally a balance, with most games having a couple of fights, and of course there are big checks throughout. It is fairly uncommon to have a game with little to no penalties and physicality nowadays because it is all part-and-parcel of the sport. Did you enjoy it? A great atmosphere I imagine.

Matty

Matty I certainly am. I much prefer ice hockey to any other English sport because of its format, which means that the teams finishing bottom (would do not get relegated) get the first pick of the new college talent, which means that their teams improves indefinitely and the following seasons they do better. Likewise the top teams have to sell players to keep below the salary cap. Also there are 82 games in a season, so plenty of games to watch. When I am out there I will most likely just go ice skating, but I am going to play football (being soccer) and hopefully actually play at quite a high standard. Fingers crossed.
